Plans have been submitted for the development of 3,500 new homes on a former World War II airfield in Cambridgeshire. The 210-hectare Bourn Airfield site is located Cambourne and Caldecote around 9 kilometres west of the city of Cambridge.

In addition to the new homes, the development would see the creation of a new village centre, new health facilities, three schools, open spaces and leisure facilities. A new linear park would also be created through the new community, denoting the position of one of the airfield’s existing runways.

The developer behind the scheme is Countryside, and their director Andrew Taylor believes that “there is a massive need for more housing in Cambridgeshire, and by building at scale, we can also provide the infrastructure such as schools and transport that are needed to support new communities and which benefit the whole area”.

In January 2017, South Cambridgeshire Council also approved plans for 2,350 new homes on a site to the west of the airfield.
